Prevention

What you can do yourself and what is better left to a specialist

Removing food sources, keeping bins closed, sealing the compost and moving the woodpile away from the wall are jobs an owner can do alone, and they have an immediate effect. Sealing gaps with metal mesh and cement mortar is usually within your own reach too, as long as the spots are accessible. A specialist is needed when the routes through a building have to be worked out, when stations have to be set out on a commercial site, or when it is unclear where the pressure is coming from and the outward signs do not say.

What a year of prevention looks like

In spring you check what the winter has left behind: cracks in the foundations, damaged ventilation grilles and basement door thresholds. In summer you sort out the yard — the compost, the firewood, the bird feeders. August and September bring the main work: inspecting and protecting the perimeter before the autumn migration. In winter you watch the indoor spaces, because that is when the population concentrates in the warmth. This rhythm costs less than a single treatment once rodents are already in the structure.

Why prevention is the cheapest form of control

Preventive treatment usually takes one planned callout before the season. Treatment once rodents are already nesting in the structure or the insulation takes several checks and often repairs as well — gnawed cables, damaged insulation, contaminated food. The difference is not measured in percentages but in multiples. On sites under constant pressure from outside, prevention is not a choice but the cheaper strategy.

The three steps with the biggest effect

The first is sealing gaps: a mouse needs only 6–7 mm, a rat a 20 mm opening. The second is removing food sources — closed bins, food in metal or hard plastic containers, a covered compost. The third is protecting the perimeter before the autumn migration. Together these three steps head off most situations before they ever become a problem.

When to start

The key period is August and the start of September, before night temperatures drop below about ten degrees. That is when rodents start moving indoors, and buildings with a protected perimeter let that wave pass by. If the work is done in November, part of the population is already inside and the job is a different one.
