Each species behaves differently: one digs burrows, another climbs. That is exactly what decides where the stations go.

Treating rats usually takes more time than treating mice, because neophobia means the first result appears later and a follow-up check is needed. A mouse problem is often solved faster, but it calls for more careful sealing of gaps, since a mouse gets through a 6–7 mm opening. That is why identifying the species is the first step of the inspection — the method, the amount of work and the realistic timescale all follow from it.
Can a site have more than one species at once
It can, and in larger buildings with a basement it is not unusual. The sign is droppings of different sizes in the same building: 3–6 mm from mice and 15–20 mm from rats. In that case the stations have to go in at two levels — in the basement and along the foundations, and closer to the food source on the upper floors. If only one species is treated, the other carries on breeding.
Why the species decides the method
The brown rat digs burrows and moves at the lower levels — the basement, the drains, along the foundations. The black rat climbs and lives in lofts and roof structures. The house mouse stays within 3–10 metres of a food source. The field mouse comes in from outside in autumn. If the stations go in the basement but the building has black rats, they will never meet them. Misidentifying the species means stations in the wrong places and weeks lost.
How to identify the species without seeing the animal
The most reliable sign is the droppings: 3–6 mm with pointed ends for a mouse, 15–20 mm with blunt or rounded ends for a rat. The second sign is the size of the gnawing — a mouse chews an opening in wood of about 2 cm, a rat 4 cm and more. The third is the height of the grease marks along the wall. If you find both sizes of droppings, both species are present, and that changes the treatment plan.
Rodent species in Latvian buildings
In Latvian homes and commercial sites it is practically always one of four species: the brown rat, the black rat, the house mouse and the field mouse. Each differs in size, in where it lives in the building and in how it reacts to new objects. These differences are not academic — they decide directly at which level of the building the inspection starts and how long to wait for the first result.
